Some Facts About The Eating Disorder Known As Bulimia
By Kerris Samson

Yes, we all have heard of anorexia and it is now the most commonly recognized of all eating disorders by the medical community. But for those that suffer from the eating disorder known as Bulimia it is important that they same emphasis is placed on treating it as anorexia. For many eating disorders, bulimia included their are many health problems associatedwith them.

In some cases there are bulimics (sufferers of bulimia) who prefer to restrict the amount of food they consume as an anorexic does. But in the majority of cases when a person has the eating disorder bulimia what they prefer to do is consume and then try a number of different methods in order to expel it from their bodies after they have eatenit.

It is important that when thinking if you or someone you know is bulimic is to not confuse this disorder with binge eating. A person who is bulimic will prefer to eat regular meals and then once consumed will then find ways of getting the food they have eaten out of their system. The most common ways they do this is through out self-induced vomiting or throughtaking laxatives.

The biggest problem faced both by those close to a sufferer of a bulimia or by a medical professional is actually recognizing that they have the condition in the first case. With anorexia and binge eating people will see that the person's weight changes dramatically. But with bulimia there may be no difference in their weight, although for some they maybe overweight.

As with all eating disorders each one can cause seriously health problems to the sufferer. With bulimia those that choose to remove the food they have eaten through self-induced vomiting are placing considerable amounts of strain on to their heart and other major organs within thebody.

The other major problem with self-induced vomiting and the taking of laxatives to purge the body of these foods is that the person is not getting sufficient amounts of nutrients into it. It is these nutrients which actually help with the body to function properly especially in relation to all major organs and other systems within the body. If a person is for bulimic for any length of time this can turn into a lifethreatening situation.

Along with the other forms of eating disorders in most cases there is an underlying psychological cause for a person to suffer from them. Certainly when it comes to anorexia nervosa (the most common of them all) there is a higher chance of those suffering from this one to develop bulimia as well. Many doctors there find that by treating the underlying psychological causes they can treat these disorders muchmore effectively.

Although someone you may know may have suffered from bulimia at some stage of their life, just because they seem to be eating properly now does not mean that they are suffering any more. In fact this is often the complete opposite and it is only once they have faced up to the fact that they are suffering from eating disorders, bulimia included can they then ask for help to treatit.
