The Single Most Effective Ab Exercise
By Duncan Idaho
Surveys rank flat, hard abs as the most attractive body part on males and females, so it's no wonder that people are constantly struggling to achieve six-pack abs. However, most of them are going about it the hard, long way. I am about to tell you how to perform the single most effective ab exercise, used by Olympic gymnasts, so read on if you would like to harden, flatten, and buildyour abs.
Enter the hanging leg raise. Consider this exercise the golden standard for all abdominal exercises, just as the pullup is for your back. It works like this: as you hang from a bar, you curl your hips and knees up to your chest. It may sound really hard, and it is at first - but you'll get the hang of it quickly. Read on and you'll soon realize why the guys with the best abs in the gym are the ones that you don't see doing curls on the mat, rather hanging from bars.
Grab a chinup bar with an overhand grip, hands slightly wider than shoulder-width. In the same movement, bend your knees, raise your hips, and curl your lower back underneath you as you lift your thighs toward your chest. Pause for a second when the fronts of your thighs reach your chest, then lower your legsand repeat.
The first time you do this you may only be able to perform one. That's ok, just make sure that you are doing it with correct form. Work up your count and repetitions, and in no time you will start to see impressive results. The great thing about this exercise is that it also works your back, arms, and endurance.
