Methods of Water Purification
By John Steele
Many people balk at the idea of a whole house water purification or treatment system and believe the water coming from their tap is entirely safe. Although people are not dying from water born diseases like cholera anymore it does not mean the water flowing from the tap is free from contaminants. Tap water may contain minerals and other less than wholesome substances that can be dangerous if consumed over long periods of time.
Chlorine is the number-one problem with untreated tap water. It has been used prodigiously as a sanitizer because of its effect on pathogenic bacteria. It's a relatively cheap way to kill bacteria in water but it is not without risks. Chlorine has been linked to cancer and other serious health problems. Though chlorine is used more often by municipalities than any other form of water treatment it is not entirely effective at killing pathogens and tap water can still make you sick if it not treated properly. Drinking tap water is not the only way chlorine is absorbed in the body. Your body absorbs twice as much chlorine when you take a shower as it does from drinking chlorinated water.
The safest and most reliable way to ensure your water is safe to drink and free of contaminants is to invest in a home water filtration system. An in house system will remove sediment which contains many types of contaminants including lead and agricultural waste which are slowly leeching their way into the water supply.
One popular form of home water filtration is the (POU) or point of use device. This unit connects directly to your faucet or showerhead and removes toxic substances directly from the line as the water passes through it. The main benefit of a POU is that the water is filtered as it leaves the tap thus insuring that it will not be susceptible to any contamination by being stored in a tank or large water line.
Distillation and reverse osmosis are popular home purification methods but neither one of them will remove all contaminants from your water drinking supply and neither method will process water quickly.
The best and most effective way to remove harmful substances from your water is with a carbon based water purification system. They are highly effective at removing unwanted chemicals and can process water quickly. Cheap single filter systems with one carbon strainer are better than nothing but they become clogged quickly and the contaminants will slip back into your water drinking supply.
Multi-step water filtration units are best. These devices have more than one strainer and will ensure that all pathogens and potentially hazardous minerals and chemicals are removed from your drinking water.
There are many dangerous and potentially harmful chemicals and minerals that can end up in the water you drink and bathe in. Children and pets can be especially susceptible to the effects of these substances. By treating the water that comes into your home you can insure that your family will enjoy the safest most potable water possible.
