Rheumatoid Arthritis and Gout
Here is an important type of arthritis we are going to talk about - Rheumatoid Arthritis which affects the younger people, most commonly the women. The cause is not so certain although a virus is expected to be one of the causes for it. It starts with the small joints of hands and wrists and may be taken as general illness. The joints tend to be more hot and aggressive as compared to that in osteoarthritis and may get relieved only with the injections of cortisone and cold applications.
How to treat in the less acute stages of arthritis?
In both the cases (osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis), mild stages can be relieved with a bit of exercise, massage to surrounding muscles, heat or hydrotherapy. If the patient is not able to do some exercise on his own, then a physiotherapist is advised. He/she will put the joint passively in full movement. This will prevent you from your joint stiffness and deformity which can develop the moment you stop making use of the concerned joints.
All forms of arthritis are said to benefit from the tablets that reduce the inflammation and pain (like aspirin, indomethacin, etc.) and rheumatoid arthritis may also be treated by gold injections, penicillamine and cortisone. Some also claim that cod liver oil is highly beneficial in all forms of arthritis. Many sufferers have got relief with the modern joint replacement operations.
Pain relief and better mobility, especially in the hip, are achieved in a very short time.
In children, the form of arthritis found is named Still's disease, a form of rheumatoid arthritis. This condition in children requires special treatment in special centre.
One more form of arthritis is Gout. There are several other types but the general priorities of management are the same. Now, gout is a form of extremely painful arthritis that is caused by crystals of uric acid getting accumulated in the joints. The most affected part is the big toe, and the disease manifests itself by recurrent attacks of pain. Other joints can also get affected with time.
How is gout treated?
Gout treatment consists of bringing your drinking habit to moderation, reduction of offal in the diet and giving proper rest to your joints during the acute attacks. Tablets is another resource to beat gout as they lessen the joint inflammation during such attacks. One such tablet is Allopurinol which if taken regularly can prevent most recurrences by reducing the uric acid level in your affected body.
